OF CORNISH
1964 - |
|
Cornish
Rovers, as it was known when first formed, began as a football club in
1964. It came about because the majority of members playing for Anerley
Methodist Youth Club decided that they could no longer play for them because
of its policy of not allowing people to play who did not attend the monthly
youth club church service. At the time there were a couple of players
that we wanted to play for us who fitted into that category, Herbie Carter
and Nidge Paterson. A meeting was held above the Cornish Arms, a pub in
Jasmine Grove, just over the road from the youth club, which was run by
Ron Paterson's mum and dad, Stan and Mary. It was agreed that we should
form our own club and run from the pub and that Stan wold be our Chairman/President
and our manager was Sam Eaglestone, and the name Cornish Rovers was adopted.
Our home pitch was Betts Park in Anerley and by today's standards the
changing rooms were primative. No showers, just buckets of cold water
to wash in at the end of the game. We never lost a home game all the time
we played there. In our first year the team consisted of thirteen players;
Herbie Carter, John Theobald, Pete Davies, Tony Attree, Ron Paterson,
John McCall, Nidge Paterson, Roy Woodley, Charlie Clarke, Laurie Woodley,
Colin Burnham, Roger Ward and Dave Panther. Our first year saw success
in us winning both the league and the cup, the final of was played at
Stanhope Rec, later to become our home ground for a few seasons. Our very
first captain for that year was Roy Woodley who gave up his place in the
team so that his brother could play in the final.

These
next two photos I think were taken in about 1975. They were a selection
of the then Cornish teams and a team made up of most of the original Cornish
players and a
few guests. The match was to celebrate 10 years as a football club. The game was played at Harvington Sports ground. |
